आदि शंकराचार्य का यहाँ आगमन

  • Somnath, revered as one of the twelve Jyotirliṅgas, stands on the western coast of Bhārata, where the vast ocean meets the sacred presence of Śiva. The liṅga here, traditionally understood as self-manifest (svayambhū), is not merely an object of ritual veneration but a metaphysical symbol—an aniconic pillar of light (jyoti) that transcends form, embodying the infinite and unbounded nature of Śiva.
  • Within the temple complex resides Kapardī Gaapati, regarded in local tradition as the bindu—the subtle point of origin from which divine manifestation unfolds. Flanked by Siddhi and Buddhi, this form of Gaṇeśa is held by the local custodial traditions to be the Śakti-kendra of Somnath, the energetic nucleus sustaining the sanctity and continuity of the kṣetra. Oral traditions further associate this locus with Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, who is believed to have consecrated a Kālī vigraha (right below the Kapardī Gaapati) in the subterranean region of the complex with a specific ritual intent, thereby reinforcing the protective and transformative energies of the site. Adjacent to the Gaṇapati shrine, a vigraha identified in local śāstric understanding as that of Ādi Śaṅkara stands as a commemorative marker of this association.
  • The visit to Jūnā-Akāā, identified with a Śakti Pīṭha, centers around the worship of a Kālīkā vigraha. While traditional accounts affirm that Ādi Śaṅkarācārya visited this स्थल and performed arcana, the extant śāstric understanding clarifies that the present vigraha is not directly attributed to his स्थापना. Instead, he is said to have performed a Śrīcakra pratiṣṭhā here, invoking the subtle presence of the Divine Mother in her geometric essence. However, both the original mūla-vigraha and the installed Śrīcakra are presently not traceable, leaving behind a layered tradition of presence and absence.
  • Local lore also speaks of a remarkable जलाशय (water body) in the vicinity, said to yield sweet water despite its proximity to the saline ocean. A traditional explanation attributes this phenomenon to Ādi Śaṅkara himself, who is believed to have bathed there, thereby sanctifying the waters and altering their nature—a narrative that reflects the enduring attribution of sacred transformation to his presence.
  • During the stay of one week in Somnath, the Gurugalu resided near the Śaśi-bhūaa temple, itself an ancient shrine associated with Śiva as the bearer of the moon, further deepening the spiritual ambiance of the pilgrimage.
  • Prabhāsa, the larger sacred क्षेत्र encompassing Somnath, is extolled in Purāṇic literature as a स्थल of महान् tīrtha-saṅgama and divine घटनाएँ. Within this क्षेत्र, there are indications of a pāda (sacred footprint) of Sri Krishna (pāda is no longer visible), with certain traditions suggesting a connection to Ādi Śaṅkarācārya and requires further textual corroboration.
  • The Kāśī Viśvanātha temple within the परिसर stands as a significant Śaiva shrine in its own right. According to local śāstric accounts, the liṅga here is believed to have been consecrated (pratiṣṭhita) by Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, thus linking it0 to the broader network of his स्थापत्य and ritual interventions across Bhārata.
  • Similarly, the Bhimanatha Temple (with Bhimanatha Vigraha), another महत्वपूर्ण shrine in the region, is revered within the tradition; śāstric assertions maintain that this liṅga too was established by Ādi Śaṅkara, reinforcing the perception of his role in revitalizing and systematising sacred geographies.
