आदि शंकराचार्य का यहाँ आगमन
- Tucked away within the narrow lanes of Prabhāsa Kṣetra stands an ancient and unassuming Sūryanārāyaṇa Temple, a shrine that quietly preserves a luminous and living spiritual legacy.
- Local tradition holds that Adi Shankaracharya observed his Chāturmāsya here, transforming this modest space into a vibrant centre of śāstra and sādhana. The period was marked by intense teaching—discourses on Bhāṣyas and Prakaraṇa Granthas were conducted through the mornings and afternoons, drawing seekers into the depths of Advaita. Two of his close disciples were present throughout, alongside 138 Paramahaṁsa Parivrājakas, participating in this profound spiritual retreat.
- It is here that the Āchārya is traditionally believed to have established the Pañchāyatana Paddhati of worship, consecrating five sacred vigrahas—Īśvara, Gaṇapati, Chaturbhuja Pattābhi Rāma, Kālī, and Sūrya—thereby harmonising diverse manifestations of the Divine into a unified mode of upāsanā.
- As part of his Chāturmāsya observances, the Āchārya performed Nitya pūjā each night around 8 PM, worshipping Sūrya along with Chāyā Devī. These sacred rituals drew large gatherings of devotees—often exceeding 500— who assembled to witness the profound confluence of devotion and knowledge embodied in his daily worship.
- An intriguing aspect of this sacred stay is that the Āchārya is believed to have spent one month in a nearby cave and another in the open, a rhythm whose deeper significance remains unknown, yet evocative of profound tapas.
- Even today, the surrounding tribal communities continue to uphold steadfast dhārmic practices, preserving traditional modes of worship and strongly resisting external influences. This enduring spiritual resilience is locally attributed to the unseen yet powerful grace of the Āchārya, whose presence is believed to sanctify this kṣetra to this day.
