Āmbē Jāgāī (Yogēśvarī) — Ambejogai
ಆದಿ ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಭೇಟಿ
- The shrine of Āmbē Jāgāī Yogēśvarī, located near Parli, is a prominent Śakti kṣetra, revered as a powerful manifestation of the Divine Mother. It forms a paired sacred geography with Vaidyanātha, linking Śiva and Śakti across two closely connected sites.
- Local tradition narrates that a marriage between Yogēśvarī and Vaidyanātha was arranged but did not take place, and that the two remained at their respective kṣetras. This separation is understood to give rise to a paired sacred landscape, where Ambejogai (Śakti) and Parli (Śiva) are worshipped in complementarity across space.
- It is held that Ādi Śaṅkarācārya performed a pratiṣṭhā of the Bhavānī vigraha here (this vigraha is within the temple complex and in close proximity to the existing shrine), installing a Śrīcakra beneath the deity. A liṅga is also present, reinforcing the unity of Śiva and Śakti at the site. Tradition further maintains that the utsava-mūrti (processional deity) was given or consecrated by Śaṅkarācārya.
Pāṣāṇī (The Stone Field)
- Near Ambejogai lies the site known in tradition as Pāṣāṇī, associated with the well-known narrative that those connected with the interrupted divine wedding were turned into stone by the Goddess’s curse. The scattered stone formations in the area are interpreted as remnants of this घटना, giving physical form to the story.
- The site also preserves a Pādukā (sacred footprint), revered locally as that of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, marking his presence within this sacred landscape.
- Tradition further suggests that this region was once a strong center of Kālamukha practice, and that Adi Śaṅkarācārya engaged with this milieu very successfully. A nearby cave is associated with Adi Śaṅkarācārya, from which he is believed to have addressed practitioners and articulated the principles of right conduct and understanding. In this memory, the cave becomes not merely a physical स्थल, but a place of proclamation—where teaching was made direct, public, and transformative.
