Vaidyanātheśvara Jyotirliṅga — Parli
ಆದಿ ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಭೇಟಿ
- The Vaidyanātheśvara Jyotirliṅga at Parli is revered as one of the sacred Jyotirliṅgas of Śiva, known especially for its association with healing (Vaidya) and restoration. It stands as a major Śaiva kṣetra within the Deccan, drawing together layers of temple worship, local tradition, and philosophical memory.
- Tradition holds that Ādi Śaṅkarācārya had a special bhāva for this Jyotirliṅga, and that his visit was not incidental but purposeful. The liṅga, as seen today, appears relatively recent in its outer form, yet devotees point to a distinct “bāṇa-like impression”.
- Within local and historical memory, the region is associated with the presence of Kālamukha Śaiva ascetics, a sect linked to esoteric and at times severe Tantric practices, often centered on intense ritual discipline and unconventional modes of worship. Tradition holds that such practices, when they became extreme or misaligned, led to social and spiritual distress, and that Ādi Śaṅkarācārya’s visit was in part to restore balance—reaffirming a more harmonized, śāstrically grounded path of Śaiva worship.
- The temple परिसर preserves several significant vigrahas (icons):
- A small liṅga accompanied by an idol performing namaskāra, regarded as highly ancient and understood as a form of Adi Śaṅkara-anugraha
- A Gaṇapati vigraha, also traditionally associated with Adi Śaṅkarācārya’s worship
- A Nārada idol, linked to a distinctive local belief: devotees whisper their ailments into Nārada’s ear, who is understood to convey them to Vaidyanātha, the divine healer
- A goddess (Ammanavara) vigraha, most often identified with Pārvatī, and believed to have been worshipped by Śaṅkara
- Tradition further holds that Śaṅkarācārya resided here for a brief period (often recalled as five days), during which the site was ritually and spiritually affirmed.
