Panhalakaji Caves
ಆದಿ ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಭೇಟಿ
- The Panhale Kaji Caves, located in Ratnagiri, forms one of the largest rock-cut cave complexes in the Konkan region, carved into a laterite hill overlooking the Kotjai river valley and consisting of nearly 28 interconnected caves. Unlike a single shrine site, the complex appears to have functioned as a full spiritual settlement with meditation cells, assembly halls for discourse, shrine chambers containing deities, residential spaces, and rock-cut water cisterns.
- The Konkan hills surrounding the caves have historically been home to forest and mountain communities, including tribal groups associated with the Western Ghats region and related communities.It is widely held in the region that Adi Shankaracharya stayed at Panhale Kaji for six days during his travels across the western coast of Bharat.
- Local tradition holds that during the stay, Adi Shankaracharya interacted with the people living in these regions, teaching them the recitation of the Shiva Panchakshara Stotram . He is also believed to have guided them in simple forms of worship, including the pooja vidhana of Sri Dakshinamurthy, Shiva and Parvathi, Ganapathi and Skanda (Subramanya) helping bring these practices into the spiritual life of the local communities. Various art forms including sculptures, drawings and inscriptions on the cave walls stand as testament to the above.
- Residents of the region once worshipped a pair of Padukas believed to be associated with Adi Shankaracharya. Over time, parts of these Padukas appear to have been damaged and remain only partially preserved today. In later periods, various claims have also emerged linking the Padukas to other saints.
