Sheetala Devi Temple - Mahur
ಆದಿ ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಭೇಟಿ
- The Sheetala Devi Temple is located close to the sacred hill region of Mahurgad Fort in Mahur. The shrine is dedicated to Sheetala Devi, the goddess traditionally worshipped as the protector from epidemics and diseases.
- Local tradition holds—supported by references in regional Śāstraic accounts—that the shrine was established by Adi Shankaracharya. It is believed that Adi Shankara performed an Āvāhana (ritual invocation) of Sheetala Devi here, invoking the deity specifically for the protection of the region from illness and epidemics.
- Over time, the shrine came under the care of a local family who continued the worship. In the course of time, the methods and practices of worship evolved, reflecting local traditions, though devotees maintain that the sanctity and nature of the deity herself remain unchanged.
