- Krimchi is an ancient temple settlement near Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir, renowned for its group of seven stone temples built in the Nagara architectural tradition. Today, only one of these temples remains an active place of worship, while the others stand vacant and non-operational, preserving the memory of a once-thriving sacred complex. The temples represent some of the earliest surviving examples of stone temple architecture in the Jammu region.
- Within the operational shrine stands an Ishwara Liṅga complete with a Soma-sūtra, continuing the tradition of worship that has endured through the centuries. Local tradition holds that although the region witnessed periods of plundering and destruction, this Liṅga remained undisturbed because the people invoked it as the very presence of Adi Shankaracharya in the form of Ishwara. Just outside the temple lies a large stone revered as the Padukā of Adi Shankaracharya, while a Devi Vigraha that continues to receive daily worship is believed to retain the spiritual potency bestowed through his anugraha.
- The surrounding hills preserve further sacred memories associated with the Acharya. Tradition speaks of Adi Shankaracharya residing in one cave and performing intense anuṣṭhāna in another nearby cave, both situated amidst the hill slopes overlooking the temple complex. Footprints revered as those of the Acharya are also shown within the cave precincts, forming an enduring part of the living heritage and oral traditions preserved by the local community.
The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
