Sri Nrusimha Temple Shankatirtha

- The Sri Nrusimha Temple Shankatirth is an ancient shrine situated on the banks of the Godavari, where the sacred Shankatirtha serves as a revered water source for ritual bathing before offering prayers to Sri Nrusimha.
- According to Shastras and local tradition associated with the Sri Nrusimha Temple Shanka-tirtha, Adi Shankaracharya visited the site to engage scholars of other philosophical traditions that were very influential in the region. During his stay, he is believed to have consecrated an idol of Lakshmi Narasimha and spent time both at Shankatirth and nearby Vimaleshwara / Kaleshwara debating these schools of philosophy and eventually winning them over. Temple lore further recounts that the original idol installed by Shankaracharya was inadvertently immersed in the waters during a later phase of temple restoration, after which a new idol was installed during the period of the Chalukyas of Badami.
- One of the temple door panels features a sculpted YATI (ascetic), while the upper portion of the panel depicts Hanuman. Shastras hold that the presence of Anjaneya above the doorway that the Acharya himself consecrated and established the Hanuman image during his visit to the shrine.
- Outside the Sri Nrusimha Temple Shankatirth there stands an Ishwara shrine. An old Shiva Linga with soma-sutra is placed in the outside. Shastras associate this old Shiva Linga with Adi Shankaracharya, interpreting it as part of a Hari–Hara expression at the sacred site, bringing together the worship of Narasimha and Shiva. This arrangement symbolised spiritual unity and encouraged the community to remain steadfast in their dharmic traditions during periods of intense philosophical contest in the region.
