- Nestled on the serene banks of the Kopai River near Bolpur, Kankaleshwari Shakti Peetha, affectionately revered by devotees as "Kankali Mata", is among the most sacred manifestations of the Divine Mother in eastern Bharat. Counted among the revered Shakti Peethas, the kshetra has, for centuries, drawn seekers, ascetics, and pilgrims who come to experience the profound spiritual energy that permeates this ancient seat of Shakti worship.
- According to the sacred traditions of the Peetha, it is here that the "waist (Kankala)" of Devi Sati fell following the Daksha Yajna, sanctifying the land with the eternal presence of the Divine Mother. The sacred "pond" adjoining the temple is held in deep reverence, for local tradition believes that it marks the very spot where this sacred event occurred. Even today, devotees offer prayers at the pond before entering the shrine, preserving an unbroken tradition that has endured through generations.
- The temple enshrines the "Mūla Vigraha" of Kankaleshwari, revered as the eternal embodiment of the Divine Mother. While the image presently worshipped in the sanctum is of comparatively recent origin, temple tradition holds that the original "Mūla Vigraha" received the "anugraha of Bhagavatpada Adi Shankaracharya" during his visit to this sacred kshetra. The continued worship at the shrine is regarded as an uninterrupted continuation of that ancient spiritual lineage, preserving the blessings bestowed upon the Divine Mother by the Jagadguru.
- A distinctive feature of the temple complex is the shrine dedicated to "Bhairava", the guardian deity of the Shakti Peetha. Local tradition reveres this "Bhairava Pratishtha" as having been consecrated by Bhagavatpada Adi Shankaracharya, reaffirming the inseparable unity of Shiva and Shakti that lies at the heart of Sanatana Dharma. The presence of Bhairava completes the sacred character of the Peetha, symbolising the eternal guardianship of the Divine Mother.
- Among the enduring traditions associated with Kankaleshwari is an ancient cave situated within the sacred precincts. Temple lore preserves the remarkable belief that this subterranean passage extends all the way to the sacred "Manikarnika Ghat" in Kashi, symbolically linking two of Bharat's most revered centres of spiritual awakening. Whether understood literally or as an expression of sacred geography, the tradition reflects the profound spiritual interconnectedness that has long characterised the pilgrimage traditions of Bharat.
- Temple tradition reveres the visit of Bhagavatpada Adi Shankaracharya to Kankaleshwari during his Digvijaya across Bharat. His worship of the Divine Mother, his anugraha upon the Mūla Vigraha, and the consecration of the Bhairava shrine are remembered as milestones in the preservation and revitalisation of Devi Upasana within the Vedic tradition. These living traditions continue to inspire countless devotees and remain an integral part of the kshetra's spiritual identity.
