- Nestled in the breathtaking Kullu-Manali valley of Himachal Pradesh, the Chinmaya Mission centre here occupies a kshetra of extraordinary antiquity and sanctity — a ground hallowed by the living presence of Adi Shankaracharya himself during his Yatra across the Indian subcontinent.
- Tradition firmly holds that the Acharya observed Chaturmasya at this very kshetra — the same sacred ground that today houses the Chinmaya Mission's Prarthana Mandir — making this one of the most significant Shankaracharya-associated sites in the entire Himalayan corridor.
- The physical evidence of the Acharya's presence, preserved within the ground of this kshetra, is remarkable in its specificity and detail. In front of the Anjaneya Temple, three sets of Padukas of Adi Shankaracharya stand consecrated within the ground — accompanied by his Kamandalu and a wooden Bhiksha plate, all preserved at a depth of approximately eight feet.
- Before the Rama Temple, one further set of Padukas lies enshrined within the earth — and at another location within the same kshetra, the Patre used by the Acharya for preparing Bhiksha has been found preserved at a similar depth, silent testimony to the daily rhythms of his monastic life at this site.
- That Adi Shankaracharya chose this valley — at the confluence of the sacred Beas and in the shadow of the Dhauladhar range — for his Chaturmasya observance speaks to the deep sacred geography of Kullu-Manali, a landscape the Acharya recognised, consecrated, and charged with a presence that this ground continues to hold, fourteen centuries later, in unbroken continuity.
The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
