- Anjaneya Temple is a revered Hanuman shrine situated in Jalloke village in the border belt of Punjab near the Sutlej river region. The sacred geography of the region is closely connected to the frontier landscape near the India–Pakistan border. A major bridge across the Sutlej in this belt historically connected movement routes across regions that today lie between India and Pakistan.
- Oral traditions preserved by devotees and custodians strongly associate the shrine with the travels and consecratory activity of Adi Shankaracharya in the Punjab frontier region.
- Local custodial tradition maintains that on: Bhadrapada Krishna Panchami, 609 AD, Adi Shankaracharya consecrated the Anjaneya Vigraha at the shrine. Tradition further states that the consecration was performed in response to a grave “Sankata” or spiritual crisis affecting the region. The temple reflects the older northwestern tradition where Hanuman shrines often functioned as:
- kṣetra-rakshaka sthalas,
- ascetic centers,
- and protective spiritual nodes in border regions.
- Right opposite the Anjaneya Temple stands an ancient Ishwara Linga. Local tradition maintains that Adi Shankaracharya himself consecrated the Ishwara Liṅga at this temple during the same spiritual mission connected with the region.
- The traditions connected with the temple primarily survive through living oral transmission and local custodial memory rather than inscriptionally verified historical documentation.
The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
