Kolhapur Mahalakshmi Temple

आदि शंकराचार्य का यहाँ आगमन

Kolhapur Mahalakshmi Temple

  • Local belief holds that Adi Shankaracharya visited this powerful seat of the Divine Mother at Kolhapur and established the Śrī Chakra, invoking the subtle presence of the Supreme Shakti. In the dhyāna śloka associated with the deity appears the phrase “vtta-trayānvitam” — “adorned with three circles.” Yet today only a single visible vṛtta is seen, leaving devotees to contemplate the deeper symbolic or mystical dimensions of the sacred geometry.
  • The priests of the temple also recount an ancient discipline of darśana believed to have been instituted by Adi Shankaracharya. Devotees are encouraged to enter the temple from the northern side — the direction sanctified by Kashi — and proceed through a sacred sequence of worship:
    • First Ganapati,
    • then Kashi Vishwanatha,
    • followed by Kali, and
    • finally Mahalakshmi, the compassionate giver of grace and abundance.
  • Within the temple precincts are also revered the Mūla Mātr̥kā Liga and the shrine of Ganapati. Preserved with devotion are also sacred Padukas, traditionally believed to mark the holy presence of Adi Shankaracharya. These Padukas continue to be worshipped every day, reminding devotees of the Acharya’s timeless mission — to harmonise devotion, knowledge, and sacred practice.
