Paithan

Adi Shankaracharya's Visit

  • Paithan, the ancient Pratishthana on the banks of the Godavari, is one of the oldest cultural and spiritual centers of India, associated with rich Vedic, Puranic, and Bhakti traditions. It has long been a seat of learning and devotion, with deep connections to saints, temples, and sacred ghats.
  • According to local recitations, Adi Shankaracharya visited Paithan, worshipped Ekaveera Devi, and took a sacred bath at Naga Ghat
  • Traditions further state that before the present shrine, there existed a Ganapathi temple worshipped by Adi Shankaracharya; however, certain Kalamukha Tantric practices (that used the vigraha extensively) were believed to have caused severe doshas in the kshetra. It is said that Adi Shankaracharya intervened to remove these influences and restore sanctity, after which a new shrine was established.
  • Today, local belief holds that the same Ganapathi idol remains within the temple complex, placed outside and tied to a tree due to lack of awareness. It was suggested that temple authorities re-establish a proper shrine for the deity and resume continuous worship to restore its rightful place in the sacred tradition.

The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
