Information uncovered during the Shaankara Jyoti Prakasha initiative to document Adi Shankara's continuing civilizational legacy.

Adi Shankaracharya's Visit

  • The Katyayani Arbuda Devi Mandir, nestled high in the Aravalli hills of Mount Abu, is an ancient cave shrine dedicated to Arbuda Devi, revered as a manifestation of Katyayani, one of the Navadurga forms.
  • Approached by a steep ascent, the temple draws the seeker into a natural rock cave where the Devi is experienced in a deeply primordial presence, as though emerging from the very body of the mountain.
  • The sanctity of this kshetra is further enriched by traditional accounts that Adi Shankaracharya visited this sacred site during his travels across Arbuda Parvata and offered worship here, anchoring it within the wider spiritual geography of his yatra.
  • At the Katyayani Arbuda Devi Temple, the sacred presence of the Devi is complemented by associated deities that complete the spiritual landscape of the kshetra. Within and around the temple परिसर, one encounters shrines or representations of Ganesha, Shiva, and Parvati, reflecting the inseparable unity of Shakti and Shiva. The presence of Neelkanth Mahadev in the region further reinforces the confluence. Together, these elements reveal the temple not merely as a site of Devi worship, but as a complete field of sadhana, where the devotee experiences the harmony of auspicious beginning, dynamic energy, and transcendent stillness.

The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
