Adi Shankaracharya's Visit

  • Situated at Gosanimari in the Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, the Kamteshwari Temple is one of the most revered shrines dedicated to the Divine Mother in the ancient kingdom of Kāmata. The temple stands amidst the archaeological remains of the historic capital of Kāmatapur, making it an important centre of both spiritual and historical significance. The temple and the adjoining fort complex, now protected and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), preserve the rich cultural and religious heritage of the region.
  • According to local traditions, Bhagavatpāda Ādi Śaṅkarācārya visited this sacred kṣetra during his Digvijaya across the northeastern frontiers of Bhārata. Behind the shrine of Maa Kamteshwari stands a revered Īśwara Liṅga, whose Pratiṣṭhā is traditionally attributed to Bhagavatpāda. Local tradition and Shastras further preserves that Bhagavatpāda visited the ancient fort of Kāmatapur, now an ASI-protected monument, where he met the reigning king. His visit is remembered as being undertaken to guide the ruler away from practices considered inconsistent with Vaidhika Dharma and to reaffirm the principles of righteous governance and Vedic tradition.
  • Today, Kamteshwari Temple stands as one of the foremost Śākta kṣetras of the ancient Kāmata region. The kṣetra represents the harmonious preservation of the worship of the Divine Mother, the sacred Śaiva traditions associated with Bhagavatpāda, and the enduring legacy of Sanātana Dharma amidst one of the most significant archaeological landscapes of northeastern Bhārata.

The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
