Information uncovered during the Shaankara Jyoti Prakasha initiative to document Adi Shankara's continuing civilizational legacy.
Adi Shankaracharya's Visit
- During the visit to the Jodhpur Palace and Fort, interactions were held with Maharaja Gaj Singh II and the Maharani, whose family traditions are closely associated with the Nath Sampradaya. The visit included access to the sacred Pooja rooms maintained both within the Palace and the Fort complex, preserving several ancient objects of worship and spiritual continuity connected with longstanding royal and spiritual traditions.
- Many sacred objects originally bestowed by Adi Shankaracharya was shown by the Royal family (Royal family traditions affirm the same) - these were subsequently passed down through the lineage (including maternal lineage of the Queen’s family from Poonch, during the period associated with King Baladitya).
- The Maharani also spoke in detail about an ancient Guha and strongly emphasized that it should be visited. Traditions associated with the cave indicate that, during later periods, it came to be used by Nath Sanyasis and evolved into a sacred space connected with the worship of the family deity of the royal lineage.
- Within the Guha are preserved three to four Īśwara Liṅgas, including a prominent black Liṅga traditionally believed to have been worshipped by Adi Shankaracharya himself. The cave also houses a Pāche Liṅga and two additional Vigrahas, including a Devi Vigraha, all of which are traditionally understood to have received worship and anugraha from Adi Shankaracharya during his Yatra through the region.
- The temple dedicated to the royal family deity is likewise held in local traditions to preserve a connection with Adi Shankaracharya, reflecting the enduring spiritual memory and sacred continuity maintained within the royal, Nath, and temple traditions of the region.
The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
