Adi Shankaracharya's Visit

  • Dhosi Hill, known anciently as Richa Parvat, is one of the most sacred sites in India — and has been elaborately described in the Puranas, Brahmanas, Mahabharata, and the Shatapatha Brahmana. Dhosi Hill held profound significance as the legendary tapobhoomi of Rishi Chyavana, a revered Vedic sage of the Bhrigu lineage, with continuous spiritual activity and ascetic presence dating back to millennia.
  • Once inside the fort walls, one reaches the Ashram of Rishi Chyavana, son of Rishi Bhrigu and founder of the Bhargava community; the Ashram has a Shiva temple, and the main temple enshrines idols of Sage Chyavana, Sukanya, Krishna and Radha, as well as an idol of Lord Vishnu. At the top of the hill lies a saucer-shaped plain surface where the temple dedicated to Rishi Chyavana stands prominently, along with sacred caves, a pakka kunda, and ancient herbal forest — making it a site of great spiritual and natural significance.
  • Among the sacred artefacts preserved in the collection is a revered Pādukā associated with a Vaiśya seeker from Jaisalmerwho is traditionally believed to have embraced Sanyāsa under the spiritual lineage of Adi Shankaracharya. Oral tradition maintains that the initiation into Sanyāsa was administered through Hastamalakacharya under the guidance and anugraha of Adi Shankaracharya Himself. The Pādukā is believed to have been specially blessed and bestowed upon the initiate at that time, and is revered today as a symbol of Guru-kṛpā, renunciation, and the continuity of the Advaita monastic tradition.

The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
